Bahnhofplatz Canopy Berne

Berne’s Bahnhofplatz was completely redesigned. The striking canopy – a glazed steel structure – was designed and planned by EBP in cooperation with a team of architects.

With the new design of Berne’s Bahnhofplatz, pedestrians and users of public transport regained a space that for decades had been dominated by traffic.

The canopy covers the most important pedestrian walkways and waiting rooms. At the same time, it also visibly guides pedestrians from the station concourse to the tram stops at the other end of the square. Perpendicular to this, along the axis of Bubenbergplatz – Spitalgasse, the canopy is a gateway to the old town.

The steel construction above the glass skin consists of spatially curved hollow sections with a continuously changing cross-section. The supports are fixed in the existing basement (Christoffelpassage). A suspended glass canopy consisting of laminated glass floats under the structural framework by means of point fixings. The glass surface follows the structural framework at a fixed distance.

In cooperation with the architects Marchwell/BSR Architects/Atelier 5 and with Arup, EBP designed and planned the roof construction project.

On 30 September 2009, the Swiss Institute for Steel Construction awarded the project the Prix Acier 2009. The jury praised its overall shape and the precise detailing of the steel structure, which had been reduced to the most essential elements.
