Innovative housing solutions for seniors

In the context of helping the Walder Foundation to organize an architectural design competition for the construction of a new building to house senior citizens, the EBP project team was again delighted to discover a broad willingness on the part of designers to engage in the challenge of developing unconventional ideas to arrive at innovative housing solutions for seniors.

The Walder Foundation is a private fund whose mission is to help ensure that senior citizens have access to proper and multifaceted housing, especially given the role that housing plays in securing quality of life in general for seniors.

New building offers space for innovative ideas

The Walder Foundation owns a multifamily building in the Enge district of Zurich. Given that the building is not a suitable candidate for renovation or conversion, the Walder Foundation plans to replace it with a new building, and at the same time seize an opportunity to realize a showcase project corresponding to its core mission.

To carry out its plan, the Walder Foundation invited five prominent architectural firms to submit designs in the framework of a design competition. Based on the results, it was obvious that the rather open space-allocation criteria inspired the architects to create highly imaginative and innovative solutions.

Emphasis on space allocation and district access

In deciding the winner, the jury gave special attention to urban-development factors, noise control, district and neighborhood access, address enhancement, and both apartment and common-area design. Among the many deserving candidates, the Walder Foundation ultimately selected the Zurich-based architectural firm Loeliger Strub.
