Project

Reference website to enable compliance with new littoral zone regulations

We created an online information platform to help municipalities and planning firms in the Canton of Zurich ensure compliance with new littoral zone regulations.

The various cantons in Switzerland have been called upon by the Swiss Federal Council to demarcate an extended aquatic zone around and along all of their lakes, rivers and streams. The aim of the new legislation is to protect such littoral zones and prevent excessive development along bodies of water.

Various data are necessary to determine how wide the protected littoral zone needs to be in individual cases. For instance, factors such as flood prevention, land restoration, habitat protection and water resource management need to be taken into consideration. In the Canton of Zurich, the responsibility for making these determinations often falls to the municipalities.

A step-by-step approach to completing the demarcation process

The “Protected Littoral Zone” website offers its visitors comprehensive information and a step-by-step approach to understanding the demarcation process. Appealingly designed, interactive graphics give the site’s visitors clear orientation as they navigate their way through the necessary explanations.

Working on behalf of the Zurich Office of Waste, Water, Energy and Air (AWEL), we created the website on the basis of the previously defined process and implemented it as a WordPress site with user-centered design.

Our services in the context of the project consisted of:

  • Consulting and concept development
  • Workshop with prospective users
  • Screen design
  • Content selection and editing
  • Infographics
  • Implementation as a WordPress site
  • Operation and maintenance
